To prepare:

Navigate to the Dissertation or Project Stage portion of the Doctoral Degree Coach.

Review the phases of the dissertation or project process.

Click through each phase and review its associated steps to familiarize yourself with what is to come.

1) Reflect on the ways the Doctoral Degree Coach tool can help you stay on schedule for completing your dissertation.

2) Seek out information from others who have already completed the capstone process. What challenges did they face and how long did it take them to finish each stage (prospectus, proposal, and final study)?

Note: Keep in mind that each person's journey is different. Simply use this information to begin getting an idea of what kind of time commitment will be necessary to complete your capstone.

3) Think about your own commitments and responsibilities and think about the study you plan to undertake.

4) In preparation for the meeting that you will eventually have with your Chair, use the knowledge you have been gathering to draft some initial goals and a basic timeline for completing your dissertation.

Note: Keep in mind that these goals and timing may change after meeting with your Chair. But completing this exercise now will prepare you for a more productive discussion when the time comes.

Post a response that addresses the following:

1) Explain how you plan to initiate contact with your capstone chair/mentor.

2) Based on your experiences in these seminars, list what questions you will have for your chair when you first meet.

3) Describe your personal preferences for communication and maintaining accountability with your mentor.

4) Explain how you might alter your personal preferences and compromise with your mentor based on their schedule and requirements.

5) Draft initial goals and a basic timeline for completing your capstone and provide a brief rationale for your decisions.

6) Explain which areas of knowledge about your capstone topic you need more understanding and/or training on (e.g., use of theory in your topic area, training in a particular statistical technique)
