Question: Trask expresses a critical view by a Native Hawaiian who has seen her native Hawaiian culture oppressed and then exploited (or "prostituted") in order to promote the new tourist economy. It is a good example of the conflict perspective on subcultures and countercultures-how the new dominant culture has oppressed and exploited traditional native culture to promote tourism and make money. Traditional cultural practices like hula dances have lost their traditional significance and meaning in the process. Native Hawaiians like Trask have watched this process occur with little ability to control or resist it.
