The isotope, carbon-14, is a very interesting isotope to study because of how ubiquitous carbon is in living organisms. However, isolating 14C from 14N can be very challenging. Researchers at Lawrence Livermore National Security Lab discovered that if you bombard your carbon/nitrogen-14 samples with cesium atoms, the carbon will form the C1-anion whereas nitrogen will not react at all. Explain (at the atomic level) what is occurring to produce anions of carbon but not nitrogen.
