Assignment
Choose two films or two television shows from the last 5 years and analyze the way in which ONE of the following concepts works across both of these texts:
Othering
Citizenship
Intersectionality
Essentialism
Your paper will clearly explain how this concept works, as well as advance a specific original argument about how it works in similar/connected ways in your selected texts.
Whereas Paper 1 restricted you from discussing plot and dialogue, you are now welcome to do so, though you are still also welcome to discuss other elements of form. Do not simply recount plot or dialogue, though: analyze it. A film's or television show's plot and dialogue are on the surface, obvious to all, whereas your job is to dig deeper into the text and analyze elements that may not be immediately obvious. Instead of telling your reader what happens or what is said, therefore, focus on what that means, and what messages it offers about characters and identities.
The paper should at some point contain a close analysis of one or two specific scenes in order to give evidence for your claims.
Think very carefully about which two films or television shows to discuss. Don't just pick randomly: think about elements that connect the two in ways that make a comparison illuminating, and in ways that allow you to offer sophisticated discussion of the topic word.
Purpose
This paper gives you a chance to demonstrate your understanding of course concepts and apply them to media texts of your choosing. It builds on the skills you developed in the Writing Assignments and in Paper #1. You will have an opportunity to get feedback on your writing through peer review before turning in your final paper for this assignment. The peer review process aims to help you become a stronger and more confident writer and communicator by reviewing others' writing, enabling you to edit better your own writing and to engage with the iterative process of constructing a good academic paper.
