In the first paragraph, answer these questions: To you, what would you find appealing about living a life of solitary devotion, and what do you think would be unappealing or even impossible for you? Do you think that those who have lived the monastic lifestyle have benefited society? Why or why not? Consider and write about some of those featured in the chapter, such as Hrostvit and Hildegard; would they and others like them have had such opportunities if they had not lived the monastic life? Do those who seek such a relatively sheltered life promote the ideals of their religion? Explain how they do or do not promote the ideals.

In your second paragraph, answer this question: If you were to create a monastic group, what would be two ways your group would be a place of solitude and growth for its members, and what are two ways your group would benefit society? The monastic group you create does not have to be aligned with a religion, though it could be if you choose. If possible, compare your created group to the monasticism we have read about in the textbook.
