Question 1: For your assignment, you will dive into the literature to explore prevention-focused interventions like the Aldrich Project, but you are no longer limited to exploring Second Step.

For this assignment, you must find 4 peer-reviewed journal articles (original empirical research studies only; no review papers or meta-analyses) that investigate a MEDIATING OR MODERATING VARIABLE influencing treatment outcomes (efficacy, effectiveness, dissemination, or implementation) for a substance use prevention program for children/adolescence. Review papers and meta-analyses are extremely difficult to summarize using the QuALMRI Framework, so the ″no review papers or meta-analyses″ are for your benefit. However, feel free to use the original empirical articles cited within the reviews and/or meta-analyses to find original research articles -- in this way, you′re using the reviews and/or meta-analyses as jumping off points. I highly, highly recommend coming to me to discuss your topic choice BEFORE you begin your research to ensure you are set up to success. Review the QuALMARI Framework handout under Modules ? Annotated Bibs ? Qualmari. The annotation for each study must be at least 200 words, not including the citation.

Pose the question about your work at Aldrich to guide the purpose of your literature search. You may pose one overall question for all 4 articles at the top of your submission or you can separate questions for each article which you′ll list right above each citation. For each article, clearly include the citation before you begin the annotated portion. Using the QuALMRI Framework, critically appraise the study in your own words. Because you need to write 4 of these, aim for clarity and conciseness, rather than length. Analyze the study for each step of the QuALMRI Framework OR state why the step is not applicable to your study. See rubric for more details about what we expect you to do for each step.

Question 2: What is the study trying to learn? Identify its specific and/or diffuse question(s). Alternative Hypotheses: Compose deductive logic statements. Make sure you state at least one hypothesis for if the results do not confirm the authors′ original expectations. In other words, ″If the study finds [unexpected or undesired results], that would mean [disconfirmatory hypothesis.]″ If the study is so flawed you believe their hypothesis to be unfalsifiable, state this. (Combined) Logic & Design AND Method:

Describe how the study was specifically designed to test these hypotheses. How was the study designed to maximize its internal AND external validity? What are the independent and dependent variables? Who was included and excluded and how does this relate to validity? Results: What results were found? Do NOT include any interpretation here.

Inferences: What inferences were drawn from the results? Which inferences were warranted and which were not, based on the results of the study? What inferences did you personally draw? Is this in alignment with the authors?

For each study, be sure to state clearly how this study is relevant to your work at Aldrich. Specifically, explain what you were hoping to learn when you found this article, what you learned, and how that may or may not influence your work. In other words, briefly explain how the findings of the study will impact your work at CRI, with Community Mental Heath Centers, measurement-based care, and/or similar settings and populations.
