Demonstrate Understanding of Sustainability in Design Report Assignment -
What is needed in the report?
- Explain how the lifecycle analysis is carried out.
- How does this link to design innovation and sustainability?
- Explain the relationship between lifecycle design, innovation and sustainability.
- Explaining how lifecycle analysis is undertaken and how this determines the focus for design intervention
- Discuss the competing priorities and compromises made as a result of lifecycle analysis in the development of a sustainable technological outcome.
- explaining how issues identified by lifecycle analysis led to design innovation being applied in the development of a sustainable technological outcome.
- What priorities compete when a designer is trying to undertake life cycle analysis?
- You must reference any complete sentences, screenshots, photos, diagrams etc. at the point of use in your report. If you use more than one sentence from another source this needs to be referenced at the end of your report.
Title: Use the Achievement Standard Title below
Introduction
Discuss context - local and/or wider global issues in Fashion industry in relation to and how this affects us locally.
- Discuss context - fashion industry issues at present i.e. depletion of or contamination of resources such as clean water, or unethical labour etc...
- How does our Consumerist Society contribute to the flaws in process/ development of garments, mass production?
- Why do we as designers need to consider (LCA) Life Cycle Analysis going forward? How important is this for future generations?
- Now tell me what your brief was and what you have made...have you been innovative in the way you have sourced materials, cut down on waste etc?
Define Design
Find a definition of design and then discuss your research (companies, designers, organisations etc) in relation to the intervention of sustainable design.
Define sustainability
Find a definition of the word sustainability and then discuss in context to your project.
The three pillars of sustainability
- What are the three pillars of sustainability and how are they used?
- Include a diagram and reference
- Explain how this relates to design process and practices
- Explain individually the three pillars of sustainability - Economical, Environmental, Social Environment and the impact these could have on us as humans and our planet.
My Brief
- Discuss your brief - specifications and expectations of sustainable practice etc.
- Discuss the theme i.e. Art Deco, DE constructivism, Organic etc - how you might have to make decisions about materials etc or compromise to accommodate sustainability within the design and construction of your product/ garment
- As the sole designer what do you need to consider? Why is this important?
- Tell me about your design concepts, style and purpose (function) who is it for etc.
- Is sustainability in NZ popular/trendy, Why? Explain, give existing examples - designers etc.
- Why do you think designers are making the change?
- How will this affect the environment short term or long term?
Impact of the Fashion Industry on our planet and a purpose for change!
- Discuss the key issues and impact of human population - planet, raping of resources, consumerism, waste, water, air and land pollution from production of consumer goods, fast fashion etc.
- How we can use sustainable practices to curb/ slow down some of the effects or diminish them completely allowing future generations to enjoy what we have.
(LCA) Life Cycle Analysis
- Find a definition of LCA and a diagram/ example of the linear cycle and reference this.
- Is it cyclic or linear? Explain the difference.
Life Cycle Analysis stages - discuss in relation to your project
Extraction (raw materials)
- Fabrics you will use - what are they? where do they come from?
- Have you been sustainable in the extraction of resources or not? Explain how and why etc...
- By recycling, reusing, upcycling fabrics or choosing sustainable products who will this benefit or how will this impact on the environment etc?
Production (processes)
- What processes will you undergo to make your product/garment?
- Discuss methods and materials vs effects
- Implications on environment and communities (topical at present)
- Key examples i.e. animal products, detergents, dyes, waste product etc.
- Ethical practice i.e. labour, conditions etc.
Distribution
- How have you considered transportation - environmental impacts
- How have you considered cost vs end price - ethical practice
- How have you considered your use of materials - depletion of resources, contamination to land, water, air?
- How can you justify what you are doing is sustainable in all aspects of your practice?
Consumption (product life)
- How long do you expect your product to last (consider wearer)?
- Will you disclose instructions for care to your client? What can you suggest for longevity of the product/ garment?
Disposal
- How would you dispose of your product/ garment...think about all its components and life expectancy, contamination in land fill etc?
Consider each step of the LCA you have just carried out for your product.
- Have you created a linear or cyclic life cycle?
- How have you improved the overall impact your product/ garment has on society or the environment?
- Why is it important for designers like you to carry out LCA when designing a product/ garment
Innovation
- What do we mean when we use the word innovation within design? Explain...
Competing priorities and compromises
- Explain what is meant by competing priorities and compromises
- Discuss an example of a competing priority and compromise you have made within your own design practice e.g. large amounts of fabric waste ending up in landfill in NZ, Auckland communities large, DIO trying to be more sustainable through cutting down on waste product. Trying to recycling, upcycling or re-use found fabrics (part of brief) rather than buy new fabric.
- Discuss local fabric waste issues - in relation to school - how can we make less waste.
- Discuss Reuse Mosaic Project introduced at DIO.
- Now discuss Recycling or Reuse, or Upcycling fabrics in your project.
Innovative sustainable designers
- Analyse and discuss a local designer that is innovative in the way they design and make their product/ garments
- How do they achieve this?
- Relate to LCA - are they linear or cyclic?
- You could include discussion about 'Cradle to Cradle' (C2C) and show an example if they have achieved this? Don't forget to reference if using a found diagram
How have you been innovative in your sustainable technological outcome?
- What materials did you salvage or buy? Explain fabric/ haberdashery choices and why i.e. I used the fabric and buttons of an old shirt from my local Salvation Army Op Shop (money for charity and recycling - upcycling an existing garment that could have ended up in landfill).
- How important is it that people step up and try to support eco processes no matter how big or small their projects are (back up with evidence)?
Design Process
Give examples from your own design process for the following headings...
- Empathise - Context
- Define - Research, data etc
- Ideate - ideas, concepts for possible solutions
- Tests/ trials, mock-ups, toiles etc
- Final concept drawings
- Decision making and final justification - competing priorities and compromises made within the design process
Use imagery to show process and annotate photos...
Current factors impacting on the sustainability of products:
- What current factors impact on the sustainability of your product/ garment? i.e. resource extraction, carbon emissions, ethical considerations, disposal/waste etc.
- What prohibits designers/ companies from following this Strategy?
- Discuss issues that compete with these priorities i.e. cost, communication between supplier - companies, trends - identity, availability of fabrics/ haberdashery, quality etc.
- Find a New Zealand company that has followed this strategy and has told their story of their ups and downs in Eco/ Sustainable design...discuss your findings (don't forget to reference).
Conclusion:
- Evaluate the key points in your report to demonstrate your understanding of sustainability in design.
- Discuss in relation to your project and how this could improve or impact on the wider community, NZ, global...
- How did having to make compromises within your design practice improve your design?
- Do you think the fashion industry needs to change? How could they improve on their waste product etc...?
- What could they or government environmental legislation do to improve the current situation?
- Justify how your design is sustainable, and met the brief - how? Why? Etc...
