Comparing Cases
The purpose of this activity is demonstrate understanding of physiological self-defenses from antigens. Compare and contrast content of cases. View the videos posted. Covid-19 and adult rheumatoid arthritis (ARA).
Explanations must be clear and concise covering all aspects of physiology and pathophysiology at the cellular, tissue, and organ level where appropriate. Each item should have a response that is approximately 100-400 words.
1. Explain how the inflammatory process arise in each case. Discuss the similarities and differences.
a. In each case identify the antigen or possible antigen initiating the immune defense response.
b. In your response address vascular and cellular response and its role in local/focal manifestations of inflammation (such as swelling, redness, heat, pain, and dysfunction of site).
c. In each video case, the individual directly stated or inferred to systemic manifestations consistent with acute phase inflammation. Identify one manifestation and explain how it develops.
2. Explain how the immune response occurs in each case. Discuss the similarities and differences. In your response address immune components (cytokines, complement system, T-cells, and B-cells).
3. Identify one medication (for short duration) that can be prescribed for both cases and explain how it how it affects the pathophysiology at the cellular level.
4. Explain allostatic load and the physiologic responses to allostatic overload. Explain how each individual in the videos would be impacted if experienced allostatic overload.
