Question 1: In your opinion, according to content you learned in this class who is the most important person in the history of Western Civilization as defined by this class? How did they impact society and why are they important?

Question 2: In light of reading and online discussions of James M. Dennis's book on a painting, explain how art-in this case a painting called "The Strike"-reflected aspects of life in Western Civilization during the 1800s. In other words, this question is asking you to think about the power of art as a primary source.

Question 3: In Dennis's book, pick a painting of Robert Koehler's other than "The Strike" that you find meaningful and/or significant. In your answer (identify the title of the painting and on what page it appears in the book), briefly describe that painting and explain how that painting helps you to better understand Western Civilization.

Question 4: For this question, read chapters 10-13 and the Epilogue in Dennis's book and answer the following in relation to 20th century western civilization: Upon the "rediscovery" of Koehler's painting during the 20th century, it had a major impact on American and European culture. How does Dennis argue that "The Strike" is still relevant for making sense of modern history and contemporary society? Is this a convincing argument to you? Why or why not?

Question 5: Based on ch. 7 and the Epilogue from John Fea's book about how the study of history can transform lives, and in light of your learning experiences this semester, discuss how you see the study of history as "public engagement" (p. 128), the study of history as "love" (p. 130), or the study of history as a "spiritual discipline" (p. 132). Pick one and answer.
