Assignment: If you can explain how social science is empirical and what being empirical means, identify the four types of research and discuss which are more appropriate for different research methodologies, define the key aspects of research methods, differentiate between inductive and deductive research, and discuss what challenges social science researchers face when performing research, you will have successfully achieved the module's learning objectives.

Your first assignment is due at the end of this module, and will require you to apply these various aspects of research methodology when developing your own research question and project for the semester. The assignment is presented in the Writing Assignment(s) portion of the syllabus. In summary, you need to provide a 1-2 page overview of the topic you would like to create a research proposal for by the end of the semester. If you have any questions or concerns regarding the assignments or the various learning objectives for the module, please post your questions in the interactive classroom discussion board for a classmate or the professor to provide you with feedback and advice.

OBJECTIVES

By the end of this module, you will be able to:

• Examine the scientific approach to criminology.

• Criticize the most common errors in reasoning, including overgeneralization, selective/inaccurate observation, illogical reasoning, and resistance to change.

• Evaluate the strengths, limitations, and aims of social research.

• Discuss the various methodological approaches used in criminology.

• Explain the role of criminological theory and research strategies.

You will write a short paper applying skills learned from Module 1 in order to choose a research topic , for which you will complete a proposal by the end of the semester.

Your Topic Selection paper should be 1-2 pages long, and it should include all of the following topics:

1. At least one initial research question you would like to address within this hypothetical study

2. Why you chose your research topic

3. Why you think your research topic is important to research/relevant to criminology

4. Any initial ideas you have about the approach to the research, based on the readings in Module 2. For example, think about pitfalls to avoid, difficulties that may arise, or the possible research designs to use.

HOW TO SUBMIT

All of these assignments should be typed; double-spaced; with 12-point Times New Roman, with one-inch margins. Use a formal writing tone that reflects a thoughtful synthesis of the many principles covered in the course, and that exhibits a high level of professionalism. You need a strong thesis, clear organization, lucid points, a formal tone, conventional use of language, and formatting in the APA style.
