Explain how Since the first Gulf War in 1990, 12000 Iraq refugees have been admitted to the United States. Between 2008 and 2013, approximately 91000 more refugees were admitted to the United States. The current estimate of the Iraqi population in the U.S. is 160,000 many of whom are refugees from a war-torn country. Many have chronic health conditions such as high cholesterol, hypertension, obesity , and diabetes; some have physical injuries such as wounds, amputations, and traumatic brain injury from violence and torture. Because of the violence and unrest in their country, many of these refugees face emotional and mental health issues such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Due to cultural stigmatization, lack of access, lack of outreach and education, they may not seek help for these issues.
