Case Study: Jane was a newly hired assistant nurse manager in the acute rehabilitation unit of a private hospital. She received her master's in leadership management degree a year ago at 30, but this is her first job as part of the administrative team. She is new to this role and is concerned that she cannot play her managerial position successfully and effectively in the unit. She felt intimidated because some of the staff had been working in the unit for 20 to 30 years and knew the policies and protocols of the unit more than she did as their manager. Faced with her concerns and challenges, she took the time to understand the flow of the unit and get to know her staff by allotting a few hours of her time in the morning to do rounds on the unit, study the policies and guidelines of the rehab unit; she stayed focus on her goals in maintaining patient safety and creating a healthy work environment for her staff.
