Case Study: The "United Nations, which was founded in 1945 in the wake of World War II with the purpose of avoiding future international hostilities, was formed with the objective of putting an end to that particular war". The United Nations Charter, which has been ratified by all 51 member states, establishes the organization's goals and guiding principles, one of which is to ensure the continuation of global tranquility and safety.

One of the ways in which the United Nations works to promote peace is by acting as a mediator between nations that are at odds with one another. Another approach is by delivering humanitarian relief to people who have been impacted by war or natural disasters.2014 marked the beginning of the conflict between Russia and Ukraine, which was sparked by Russia's annexation of Crimea, a peninsula on the coast of the Black Sea that had been a part of Ukraine since 1954. As a deterrent against Russia's aggressiveness, Ukraine initiated efforts to forge deeper links with Europe and NATO, with the ultimate objective of joining these organizations eventually. Russia, which saw these measures as a danger to its own security, took a stance against them and resisted them.

The situation became even more precarious in April of 2018, when Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko announced his desire to pursue membership for Ukraine in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization. As a direct reaction to this, Russia started to amass soldiers both along its border with Ukraine and within the territory of Ukraine itself.

Since 2014, the United Nations has been involved in efforts to find a solution to the war that is raging between Russia and Ukraine. "Ban Ki-Moon, the Secretary-General of the United Nations", met with the presidents of Russia and Ukraine in September 2015 in an attempt to ease tensions between the two nations.

The meeting was attended by Vladimir Putin and Petro Poroshenko, respectively. Peter van der Veen, a former Dutch diplomat, was named by Ban Ki-Moon as his Special Adviser on Georgia and Ukraine the following year. van der Veen's goal was to encourage "a peaceful settlement of unresolved problems relating to these crises via discussion. "Jeffrey Feldman, the Undersecretary-General for Political Affairs of the United Nations, traveled to Kyiv and Moscow in August 2017 for the purpose of having discussions with officials from both countries' governments on how to put an end to the violence in eastern Ukraine and implement provisions of the Minsk Agreements. The Minsk Agreements were a set of measures aimed at resolving the conflict that had been agreed upon by representatives of Russia, Ukraine, Germany, and France in February 2015 but were never fully implemented.

More recently, in "December 2019, the United States Ambassador to the United Nations, Kelly Craft", made the announcement that she would be co-chairing a new informal group called "The Friends of Coexistence." This group is comprised of envoys from 17 countries that are committed to finding a diplomatic solution to the conflict in eastern Ukraine. As a result of this investigation, ever since 2014, the United Nations has taken several steps in their pursuit of mediating and bringing an end to hostility between Russia and Ukraine. The UN's goal in doing so is to prevent the loss of donor lives on either side and, as a result, to restore some form of normalcy to the peaceful coexistence of all those who have been impacted by this tragedy.

Also, researching how the United Nations came to be helped me comprehend the rationale for this organization's existence and the objectives it pursues. It also demonstrated to me how this institution may be used to attempt to address international issues such as the one that now exists between Russia and Ukraine.
