There must be a topic sentence, background context, a claim, a citation from the work, an analysis of how the citation proves your claim, and a conclusion sentence that summarizes the main point of the paragraph.

From the Sonnets -

1. Are Sonnets 116 and 130, written by Shakespeare, utilizing and focusing more on Humanist concepts, such as Platonism and Neo-Platonism through the semblance of courtly love, or do they mostly promote Individualism through his lyrics as he declares that "If this be error and upon me prov'd, I never writ, nor no man ever lov'd"? Do you think Shakespeare is writing to a lover, or to only a friend? Justify your answer. How do these different philosophies impact the notion of the Renaissance's establishment of a "rebirth" of the culture based on your interpretation?

2. Define the Neo-Platonic idea of the immutable nature of love and time in contrast to the notion of kairos in Petrarch's sonnets. The term comes from the Greek for "right time," "opportunity," or "season." Modern Greek also defines kairos as "weather." Is Petrarch consumed with this notion of kairos, or does he truly transcend his mortal fears regarding the transitory nature of time? Does he truly reflect Socrates' notion of the active and contemplative life? Is his love for Laura an allusion to this notion of the vital nature of living a contemplative life? How does her unattainable beauty beckon his action to transcend mortality?

3. Define the notion of Petrarchan idealism through his love for Laura. Compare and contrast his tone in developing the nature of the quintessential love sonnet with that of Shakespeare's notion of the ideal love sonnet. Which poet's style best adheres to the classical aspects of Renaissance philosophy from your perspective and why?

4. How can Petrarch be interpreted as a skeptic, except that he holds onto mere religious beliefs based on his love for Laura as he wavers between fear and hope throughout the poems. Can it be interpreted that he overpowers skepticism by refuting stoic determinism? Does his emphasis on gnosis demean the power of confession as he places the burdens on himself, due to his Socratic focus on the self-examined life to such an extent? Can Petrarch's fears be interpreted as ones that overpower his hopes and lend to future skeptical philosophies found later in the Enlightenment? Why or why not? Take a stance on how you interpret his poems in a claim as you answer the prompt.
