Explain how managing a diverse workforce can contribute to an organisation''s sustained competitive advantage and meet the needs of its employees
Essay Question: Explain how managing a diverse workforce can contribute to an organisation's sustained competitive advantage and meet the needs of its employees?
To respond to this question conduct a literature review on managing diversity in the workforce to establish key arguments for and against HRM's role in managing a diverse workforce and the contribution of this to sustained competitive advantage. Then narrow your focus down and develop a case example of one organisation and one diverse group (from the list below) and explain why your chosen organisation manages diversity in general and how and why it manages the diverse group you have chosen.
Choose ONE category of employees to focus on in your paper (this is to focus you on one category of staff to simplify the task) from the following list:
- Employees (with family responsibilities);
- Older workers (with or without caring responsibilities);
- Workers with disabilities; Indigenous or minority group employees eg those from a non-English speaking background;
- Younger workers (Gen Ys);
- Gay, lesbian, bi-sexual, transexual or intersex (GLBTI) employees
You can choose any organisation you are interested in but here are some suggestions:
- IBM Australia
- Google Australia
- Any of the major Australian banks eg Westpac, ANZ, NAB.
- The AFL or other large professional sporting body
- Qantas, Jetstar, Virgin Airlines
