In Plato's dialogue Crito, Socrates makes the statement that he must act upon those "arguments" that seem best to him "on reflection." Socrates makes several other statements to the effect that we must not blindly follow the opinions of the "multitude," or what we might call popular opinion. However, as Socrates' predicament shows, acting upon one's moral convictions and going against what others might expect of us may involve a personal sacrifice. This consequence raises an important question: How could one ever know whether those moral arguments are true or correct and worth the cost?
For this assignment, try to explain what Socrates presents as the moral arguments he must follow in his situation, even at the cost of losing his life. Also try to explain how ethical relativism and ethical subjectivism pose fundamental challenges to any idea that morality can be based upon what is really true apart from opinion (see Section 1.5 of An Introduction to Business Ethics by Joseph DesJardins and Exploring Ethics by Julia Driver).
The goal of this assignment is to demonstrate an accurate understanding of the various views expressed by these different authors. I am assuming that reading philosophy is unfamiliar to you, and I am asking you to pay careful attention to what the writings actually say.
