Question: Roy Bailey, the manager of a large clothing department store in New York, was worried. Sales had been declining for the last four months. Investigations conducted by him revealed that this was due to in-house theft. He decided to have chief of security, Wayne Parker, instruct his security staff to keep a special eye on employees as they went about their business. He also instructed that packages, purses and other containers which employees carried, should be searched upon their departure from the store. When these measures failed to provide any lead to the culprit(s), Wayne suggested that they hire plain clothes police officers to observe the store's guards. Conroy agreed. But still nothing showed up.
As the theft continued, Mr Smith reluctantly decided to have Mr Parker install a hidden camera at the checkout station. The latter also suggested that they install microphones in restrooms, the stock room and employees' lounges. Within ten days, the camera had revealed who the thief was. In addition, Conroy and Wayne learnt that one employee was selling cocaine, another planned to quit without giving notice and three were extorting money from business operators downtown.
A. Use principles from Deontological Ethics and Utilitarianism to decide if Conroy acted morally.
B. Explain how Conroy and Wayne should handle the additional information they have gathered about the employees.
C. Relate FOUR (4) ways Conroy can encourage ethical behaviour amongst his employees.
