Film Analysis Assignment "Sound of Freedom"
My Film Analysis is going to be from the movie "Sound of Freedom," a 2023 American crime thriller directed by Alejandro Monteverde, which follows the story of Tim Ballard, portrayed by Jim Caviezel, a former U.S. government agent.
The purpose of this assignment is for you to use some of the theories and ideas we have discussed this semester so far (human nature and violence, and how society provides a structure to contain it, primarily).
Explain how a concept can be seen in popular culture.
Introduction: discuss your topic in a paragraph or two; why is it important to study?
Body: what I could learn about the topic represented in your film (use your textbook chapter and notes); How does what we have read this semester provide insight into this film?; What social problem(s) (crime, deviance, violence, moral issue, etc.) are represented in your film and how does a crime & society approach help us analyze it further? Consider each prompt in this potential outline section as one to two paragraphs for this section.
Conclusion: integrate all of the above to offer one or two conclusions about your topic; for example, if the topic is about Star Wars, then what are the main sociological and criminological themes and why do you think they are important?
More Tips for the Film Analysis Assignment:
- Trace the specific behavior/theme/topic throughout the film (three or four scenes); for example, trace a specific pattern of behavior
- Focus on only one specific aspect of the film, even if it has many (this is an interpretive essay on one specific aspect rather than a holistic summary/description essay).
- Conclusion: discuss your topic, not the film - you are using the film to explain about your topic (for example, violence might be the main subject) - the film is your data! **The thing relevant to the criminological theory you chose to explain what topic is about**
- Use course material to engage in a deeper reading/understanding of the film
- Consider how you might explain this film to a friend due to the content you have learned in the class - what do you think you know that they might not, and how would you explain it to them?
- What is the significance of the criminological theory topic you chose? [as a social problem/issue]
- Rather than describe two or three different types of behavior relevant to criminological theory, pick just one (even if the film has many) and describe how it is a pattern and how it relates to the plot.
