Part 1
Jimmy was born and raised in a poor family with minimal means of achieving his goals of attending a school and having a legitimate job. His economic realities prevented him from reaching culturally approved goals. When he was 14 he decided to drop out of school because selling drugs was easier and more lucrative than a high school diploma. Around the age of 16 he joined the local gangs who were engaged in violent crimes.
Question:
1. What social structural theories most emphasize as the reason that he succumbed to a delinquent or criminal lifestyle? Which theory best explains his behavior?
2. Based on Merton's strain theory, some individuals can represent more than one adaptation to strain. Watch the video provided at the link below about Ted Kaczynski, the Unabomber. Later, he became a rebel who bombed and killed people to show that he wanted to implement new goals and means as described in his manifesto.
How do you explain his behavior using the criminological theories you learned this semester?
