(S)-2-iodooctane is dissolved in acetone, and is found to rotate planepolarized light.One equivalent of radioactive Na131I is added to this solution, and the reaction is monitored by polarimetry. As the reaction proceeds, the specific rotation eventually drops to zero. Further analysis shows that the specific rotation falls to zero after half of the radioactive iodine has been consumed.
