Task - Critical review of a scientific paper
1) Background to the research and aim
Describe the background to the study. Explain the aim of the research. Explain why the research described in the paper is important.
You should read at least two additional papers that are relevant to the background. These can be reviews and we do not require you to study them in detail. You should use them to acquire more background information. You must include citations and references to any papers that you have taken information or ideas from.
2) Genomics methods used
Explain the genomics methods that have been used in the study. You should give more explanation than is provided in the paper so that a scientist who is not a genomics specialist would understand what was done. You should link the methods to the research aim and discuss whether the methods are a good way to meet this aim.
3) Explanation of one figure
Choose one figure from the paper. This must show results, not be a diagram of the study design or workflow. Paste a screenshot of the figure and legend into your submission. Explain what the figure shows. It might help to imagine that you were describing it in an oral presentation. You should describe enough for the reader to understand what is represented in the image. You should also explain what results are demonstrated by the figure. If statistical analysis was performed, you should describe the method and outcome.
4) Conclusions
Summarise the conclusions made by the authors. This should be all the conclusions drawn, not just those from the figure in 3). Discuss whether the results support their conclusions. You should also discuss whether their results are consistent with previous work. If you think further work is needed before the conclusions can be accepted, explain what analysis, experiment or data collection should be carried out.
