While the Coulomb interaction between an electron and a proton appears simple, it leads to some rather strange concepts.
(a) First, plot the potential energy as a function of the electron's distance from the nucleus, i.e.,V(r) . (Be sure to remember the sign of this potential.)
(b) Discuss the behavior as r->0.
(c) Given your answer to (b) and the fact that lower (more negative) energies are favorable, explain why the electron does not just stay at the nucleus.
The atomic mass of boron is 10.81 g/mol. The two naturally occuring isotopes are B-10 with a mass of 10.0129 amu and B-11 with a mass of 11.0093 amu. Determine the percent of naturally occuring B-10.
the wavelength of the emitted photon corresponds to the difference in energy between the two energy levels. What were the principal quantum numbers of the initial and intermediate excited states involved?
Ribonuclease P proteins RPP21 and RPP29 bind one another during complex assembly. Thermodynamic measurements reveal that ΔH° = -66.3 kJ/mol and ΔS° = -73.2 J/mole*K at 40°C. What is the equilibrium constant for the binding reaction at 40°C?
