JJ Grocer shops are being operated in major areas of Malaysia. The company employs more than 10,000 people in the country. For a more efficient hiring procedure, the Human Resource Department (HRD) is modernizing its job analysis process. Recently JJ Grocer open a vacancy for the Admin and Sales Executive positions on its website which provides a job description and person specification for interested persons to read, as well as an online application form to be filled out.

Yasin is graduated from a local University is now looking for a job. He applied for the Sales Executive position at JJ Grocer and after a week,he wascalled for the interview. At JJ Grocer, once the HR department received applications from several people, it is necessary to start the process of sifting through the information available on the candidates to select those most suited to the job. JJ Grocer conducted two types of assessments for the applicants. The first test is to check that a candidate has specific abilities that he says he has. The test on language proficiency and computer usage was given to the candidate. The second test is to verify the characteristic of the candidate and questions like this were asked: "in a group, do you introduce yourself or wait to be introduced?". Yasin went through all this recruitment and selection process with high hopes.

The HR department listed a few successful candidates. Yasin, the luckiest one, wins the job! Yasin began his first day at JJ Grocer with some trepidation. It was such a huge place. He had reported to the Market Research Department which was positioned conveniently at the main door. When Yasin got there, the head of the department (HOD) was on leave and the office was almost deserted as a major survey was being carried out by the staff which required them all to go outstation. Yasin just waited and read some magazines until the HOD came back to brief him. The next morning, the HOD arrived and was surprised to find Yasin in that office. She was a bit shocked because Yasin's clothing looked crumpled. He looked sheepish and said "last night, I couldn't find the exit. All the doors led to other offices or cupboards, so in end, I had no choice. I slept on the floor!""Oh! I forgot that you didn't go to the orientation program yet" said the HOD.

After a few months working in JJ Grocer, Yasin had received notification from HOD that he was to attend a training program. Yasin was excited. However, to his surprise, the training room was not ready for a training session. There was rubbish strewn around and tables and chairs were stacked against one wall. The trainer from headquarters came late and without introducing himself he just wrote down on the whiteboard "Training for Today: How to Improve Your Marketing and Sales". Yasin thought to himself that the trainer did not look or sound very impressive. He was wearing a shirt with curry stains on the front, baggy trousers, and sandals. The trainer talked non-stop for three hours, Yasin and other participants were all tired and keen to have a break. However, with a harsh voice, the trainer requested them to write down key points to close a sale immediately. Yasin thought that some practice sessions might be useful, so he asked the trainer, "are we going to write these points?" The answer given was, "why should we do another activity? I have told you to make close a sale and just write it".

As time pass by, Yasin found himself gaining a lot of experience working at JJ Grocer. His communication skills improved and his confidence level increased. However, he felt anxious about the appraisal session that will be conducted soon.
