For this paper, the rhetorical artifact is an episode entitled The Pool, from the NBC television show This is Us.

You will use Symbolic Interactionism to analyze and explain identity and choose either Expectations Violations theory OR Family Communication Patterns theory to explore relational impacts.

You will choose one of the siblings to analyze (Kate, Kevin, or Randall) from the show "This is Us", episode entitled "The Pool" (episode embedded below) and use the prompts below for your analysis:

1. Use Symbolic Interaction to explore...

  • How do you see their Looking Glass self socially constructed through interactions with others (siblings, parents, etc...)?
  • Do you think their self-concept occurs because others viewed them differently or treated them differently?
  • What is their "generalized other"? (For example, how does Kate identify being that she is overweight? What does society say about being "fat"?)

2. Use EVT or FCPT to explore...

  • How do you see experiences from their past impact or shape how they interact with others in present day? (For example, look at how Kevin and Randall's experience with their parents shapes their future attitudes, desires or goals as well as their relationship(s) with others or even each other).
  • Connect or build: Using an example from the episode, how do you see the connection between Symbolic Interaction theory to EVT or FCPT? Or, how do you see EVT or FCPT build upon ideas/concepts from Symbolic Interaction to provide more/greater insight or perspective into the sibling (their self concept or identity, etc...) you chose?
  • Use at least two significant theoretical concepts (from the theory you select) to flush out your analysis.
