An Enthymeme is an argument with an unstated premise.

Here is an example: "Flipper is a dolphin, so Flipper is a mammal." There is an unstated premise here, "All dolphins are mammals." This one is relatively simple. Here is a more complex example: "Congress should not pass this tax bill because it would increase the national debt and would harm to the economy in the long run." What is the missing premise? One answer could be, "Congress should not pass any bill that would increase the national debt and would harm the economy in the long run."

  • Your first task in this discussion is to share three examples of enthymemes. [Note: Please keep it simple until you feel like you have a grasp on the concept.]
  • For each enthymeme, indicate the missing premise(s) that would be needed to make the argument valid.
  • In each case, discuss whether the added premise(s) are true and adequately support the conclusion. If not, is there any way that the argument could be fixed so that the argument will not only be valid but also sound?
