Assignment: Provide your fictitious case example, including the relevant details of the case.

  • Explain why this case presents an ethical issue related to mandated reporting in your intended state of practice's rules.
  • Explain whether you would report the situation and why.
  • Explain how you would negotiate the intended and unintended consequences of your decision to report or not.

The start of the assignment so far:

Mandated Reporting

Within this paper, I will demonstrate my comprehension of ethical considerations related to mandated reporting by constructing and evaluating a hypothetical case that entails the obligation to report as per the regulations of Minnesota's licensing board. My hypothetical case will discuss the ethical considerations surrounding mandated reporting of elderly abuse, as well as how I might negotiate the consequences of reporting or not.

Hypothetical Case: Edna and George

Edna and George are a married couple in their mid-seventies who have been married for over 20 years. Edna was diagnosed with mild Alzheimer's disease in her late sixties, but within the last year, her Alzheimer's has progressed to a more moderate stage. George is Edna's primary caretaker, and a PCA comes into their house twice a week to help.

Despite George being relatively healthy and active for his age, the role of Edna's caretaker has started to take a toll on his physical and mental health. Edna's primary physician suggested that George and Edna try therapy to discuss and work through some of their declining physical and mental health struggles. George is unsure if he would be comfortable with Edna attending therapy alone, so they decided to schedule an appointment together.

At their appointment, Edna arrives walking with a cane and has visible bruises on her arms and legs. The couple seem relatively content, calm, and engaging throughout most of the initial appointment. However, towards the end, when the discussion turns to Edna's care within the household, Edna becomes agitated.

Edna's demeanor changes, and she accuses George of not taking care of her properly and being physically abusive towards her. She provides examples stating that he grabs her by the arms and yells at her, pointing to a few of the bruises on her arm as evidence. George, however, insists this is not true and brings up detailed situations of Edna running into things like her dresser drawers because she forgot to shut them and forgot she left them open. He tries to calm her and explains that he is never rough and does not yell at her. Edna seems to calm down some after his explanations. However, she does not speak much for the rest of the appointment, giving short answers and seeming a little agitated and on edge.

The problem I am looking for help with:

I am trying to locate resources to help me explain the ethical considerations regarding mandated reporting and elder abuse for a psychologist in the state of Minnesota. I need help locating laws and scholarly resources that discuss the steps a psychologist would take in my fictitious case involving Edna and George.

Sorry, I am asking on Easter....... had a family emergency this week that put me behind on homework.
