Question: An oncology nurse talked at length about her frustrations and moral distress in having trouble providing adequate pain relief to her patients. She said she only has half the painkillers she needs each shift, but knows that she will need to do what is morally and ethically right for her patients despite her feelings. Here is an excerpt of her internal conflict: 'Do I give them to the younger ones who might live longer, or the silent and suffering old ones who have worked their lives for us?' she asked. 'It just isn't fair. I know who sells the hospital drugs. Sells them! But if I complain (about him) and report his behavior, will I not have a job tomorrow?' Explain (1) ethical and (1) unethical approach the nurse can take in this situation. Make sure each response is supported by a credible reference.
