Activity 1 - Site Assessment Questions
Write out your answers to the following questions.
Explain the difference between a "Phase I Environmental Site Assessment for Property Transfer" and a "Remedial Investigation". (Research this)
Prepare a list of appropriate questions to ask if you were planning to interview someone in connection with a Phase I Site Assessment for Property Transfer. (You must come up with a minimum of 10 questions.) Be sure to formulate some open-ended questions that require an appropriate response that is not simply a "Yes" or "No" answer. How would you feel if you were asked these questions regarding your property or business?
Scenario:
You and a coworker, Pat, are working at a gas station. You are both environmental technicians working for an environmental services firm, "EZ Environmental Services." You've been sent to this gas station site by EZ's project manager, Chris Jones. Chris is your supervisor for this work. You are sampling groundwater from monitoring wells on the property. These samples will be submitted to a laboratory for analytical testing. As part of your sampling activities, you are collecting data about the condition of the wells and the depth at which you encounter water beneath the land surface while you are sampling. You are writing notes in a field notebook, labeling your samples, and filling out other important documentation as you are working.
What would be your response to each of the following questions?
- A representative of the local newspaper stops by asks you what you are doing, and wants to take your photograph.
- The site owner or gas station operator asks you what you are finding.
- Employees working at the gas station ask you what you are doing and finding.
- The next-door neighbor (or any concerned citizen) stops by and asks what you are doing and wants to know what you are finding.
- A little kid stops after school and wants to know more about what you are doing and how everything works. They also want to drop rocks down your monitoring well to see how deep the water is.
- The state environmental regulatory agency responsible for underground storage tanks stops by and asks how you are doing and asks about the status of the report that is due on this site.
