Prepare paragraph long responses to the following prompts. Two of these prompts will be on Exam One. Remember, you will not have access to your notes during the exam.
1) A scientist wants to test the effectiveness of a new drug, Clearmax to treat acne. Briefly describe a controlled experiment to test the scientist's hypothesis that Clearmax reduces occurrence of pimples. Make sure to include your prediction, IV, DV, SV and your control and experimental groups.
2) Briefly explain the Octet Rule. In your explanation include valence shell and valence number and the difference between ionic and covalent bonds and how those bonds allow atoms to reach a stable octet.
3) Describe the molecular make-up of water. What type of bonds are important to the properties of water? Name a specific special property of water and explain how that property contributes to life.
4) Briefly describe what pH measures. Define acid and base. Describe how acids, bases and buffers affect pH.
5) Plants and animals both store at least some of their energy in the form of polysaccharides. Why is energy stored in the form of polysaccharides? What is the difference between plant and animal polysaccharides? What is the functional difference between these polysaccharides?
6) Describe what limits the size of the cell. Explain how eukaryotic cells are able to grow larger than prokaryotic cells.
7) Explain Endosymbiosis theory. Which organelles are thought to originate through endosymbiosis? Describe at least two pieces of evidence for endosymbiosis theory.
