A large furnace flue operating at 440 degree C was made from a steel containing 0.10% phosphorus as an impurity. After 2 years in service, specimens were removed from the flue and tested for fracture toughness. The value of K was 30 MN/m^-3/2, compared to 100 MN/m^-3/2 for new steel. Because of this, the flue had to be scrapped for safety reasons. Explain this dramatic drop in toughness.
