Assignment Brief: You are currently being employed in the role of trainee Construction Manager for a Medium sized contractor who directly employs 70 people. Your company carries out projects range from housing developments to medium sized light industrial and commercial projects, as well as some routine and planned maintenance work for previous clients. Your employer has requested that you carry out research in order to explore the feasibility of company expansion into different types of contracts of different sizes. In order to do this, firstly, you need to critically evaluate how construction companies develop their organisation structure and business ethos, secondly, examine and compare the different factors which differentiate between construction companies, the types of tendering procedures they adopt and how this is impacted on by the types of contracts used.

Your report should be submitted in two main parts, firstly you will need to explore how construction companies have developed from their early years to become the company they are today. In order to do this, you need to explore different organisation structure for small, medium and large companies and evaluate how company growth has facilitated the companies ethical and moral business standards. Analyse how training and the recognised Professional Institutes of the Industry have contributed to the company's ethical business trading. Describe the types of professional relationships between all members of the project delivery team not only within the company but with external project stakeholders.

In the second part of the report you should explain how the type and size of company relates to the ways in which business leads are developed and delivered. You should look at the different types of companies in the construction industry and explain the types of work they carry out. How does the type of work they carry out connect the types of contracting and different types of tendering.
