A truck driver used sand to soak up a 1 g spill of lindane (C6H6Cl6). He placed the contaminated soil in an open drum which then filled with 150 L of water during a rainstorm. You test the water and find a concentration of 17 M/L. The partition coefficient for this chemical to the soil is 0.8 L/kg. How much sand did he place in the drum? Hint: the total mass of the lindane spill is now split between the water and the soil according to the partition coefficient.
