Populism and Democracy

Is populism a threat against liberal democracy or is it conversely perhaps a vitalizing component? Use at least three different theoretical sources that can be used to argue either/and why or why not populism should or should not be seen as anti-democratic or anti-liberal.

First. What does the far right (populist radical right) ideology consist of?
Second. How has this (ideology) developed over time?
Three. What does the mainstreaming of extremism stand for?
Four. Discuss both pro and con-arguments of both engagement and disengagements strategies used by the mainstream parties to counter/answer to this ideology. What are some of the pros and what are some of the cons of each strategy?
