Assessment Essay

The key topic you are responding to is ‘How theory and research influence one another, and their implications for education practice.' You will use a recent research article as a case to develop an argument about the topic.

In this task you are required to search for a recent (last 5 years) scholarly research article from a reputable academic journal. This article should report on a research study and be based in one of the topics covered in this subject, with explicit links to a relevant theory/theories. It should not be one of the subject readings.

Begin your essay with an introduction outlining your argument.

Write a short summary of the research study and findings reported in the article. Describe the theory or theories that underpin the article.

Explain and discuss the ways that the researchers utilised the theory for conducting their research. You may also discuss how the study's findings contribute to, challenge or change the theory.

Explain the implications of the research reported in the article for improving educational practice in the area of your study.

Conclude with a statement about the relationship between theory, research and practice in education as evidenced in your essay.

Include references to at least four additional academic sources relevant to the topic to support your discussion. These sources should comprise academic books and/or journal articles. Full references to these sources, together with the reference to the main article that you discussed, should be listed in the reference list.
