Amitriptyline is a tricyclic antidepressant that is also a weak monoprotic base. A clinical chemist wishes to extract this drug with chloroform from a blood sample for analysis. Derive an expression that shows how the distribution ratio (D) for this compound is related to its partition ratio between water and chloroform and its base association constant. Write your final expression in terms of K, Kb and [OH-].
