A buffering system in the blood is H2CO3/HCO4. At the normal blood pH (7.4) a solution of H2CO3 and HCO3 will change the pH abruptly if small amounts of acid or base are added since the pKa of H2CO3 is 6.4.

Explain why this apparent contradiction occurs. Support this argument with appropriate chemical equations.
