A raw wastewater is to be treated chemically for the removal of total suspended solids and phosphorus through coagulation, flocculation, and sedimentation. The wastewater characteristics are as follows: Q = 0.60 m3/s Orthophosphorus = 9.0 g/m3 as P Alkalinity = 150 g/m3 as CaCO3 pH = 6.8 Influent TSS = 180 g/m3 Alum dose = 140 mg/L as Al2(SO4)3*14H2O Sludge water content = 97% Sludge specific gravity = 1.02 Determine the sludge production in kg dry wt/d and in m3/d and estimate the alkalinity remaining in solution (or needed as an amendment) in mg CaCO3/L assuming the following conditions: 100% removal of orthophosphate as insoluble AlPO4 90% removal of influent TSS All alum not required for reaction with phosphate forms insoluble Al(OH)3*3H2O(s) All Al(OH)3*3H2O(s) formed is captured in the sludge
