Discussion
A developed set of public policy principles that represent a balance between the individual and collective concerns addressing case study 1: Social Media Influence.
According to DiResta et al. (2019) close to almost 50% of adults are getting this news from social media and are getting false information. A big issue circulating on social media is hat speech and this is leading to an increase in hate crimes against minorities (DiResta et al., 2019). The question remains how should hate speech be handled on social media and should social media outlets be treated the same as other news sources?
Being that social media is a new thing in everyone's lives and especially in the lives or of our younger generations of developing children, it is important to educate them early about the affects of social media and how to be informed, question and research the information before taking it as truth. Social media is being utilized in the classroom to teach our children and we could utilize this as a great opportunity to educate them on how to find facts and falsities. Classes can be implemented into elementary, middle, high school and colleges about safety online and checking facts in age-appropriate ways. Parents should also be included and educated on the newest internet and safety concerns; in this way they too can be educated. Online fact checks and searches can be taught to older generations of individuals in retirement communities, community centers, churches, etc.
Providing the education is the best way to inform the community of individuals that are interested in learning about it. In this way the decision is put onto the adult and the education is taught to the children of our future generations, so that they are more informed. The government has implemented changes into our educational system many times before and this time it would just be catered towards our new technology and new way of life. There will always be individuals who refuse to change with the changing times and these adults can still have the freedom to refuse to be educated.
