Experiment - Discrete & Integrated Adders/Subtractor
Objectives - After completing this experiment, you will:
1- Analyze, understand, and build a 2-bit Half adder (HA) & a 2-bit full adder (FA).
2- Build on the concept of the 2-bit adders to analyze and construct a 4-bit binary number to another.
3- Understand how control signals work and use their concept to understand how an Ex-OR gate can be used as a controlled inverter.
4- Use the concept of control signals to construct a subtractor using the same hardware used for the adder circuit.
5- Use an integrated chip adder circuit as an adder/subtractor.
This experiment will be conducted using Multisim.
Summary: Adders and subtractors are essential parts for computers and for other types of digital systems. In computers, they are used in the arithmetic and logic unit (ALU). Also, as an example, they are used as building block for multipliers and dividers. Multiplier employs the concept of shift and add while dividers employ the concept of shift and subtract. Many other applications employ adders and subtractors.
