Question

A 38-year-old husband and father of three sons in their early teens is transferred from the emergency department (ED) to the psychiatric unit after experiencing an anxiety attack and expressing suicidal ideation when he could not get the emergency funding help he needed to pay rent after losing his job. In the transfer report, the intake nurse learns that the client's chief concern reported in the ED was that he felt "useless" and was letting his family down; he admits to owning a gun but says he won't use it, if he can just be released to home. Further questioning reveals that about eight weeks ago he lost his job as a grounds worker for a landscaping company that was experiencing a downturn in business. Since losing his job, he has become increasingly withdrawn and has been consuming alcohol each night in order to get to sleep. He has also stopped playing basketball with friends and his sons on Wednesday nights at the community center.
