Question

Your friend who is a forensic nurse (or EMT or school nurse) is telling you about the challenges she faces when working with patients who have experienced sexual trauma or household trauma. She says that sometimes she will relive her own trauma and it's getting to the point where she is losing empathy for her patients and almost doesn't want to continue in her job. As a newly informed scholar on vicarious trauma, secondary trauma, burnout, and resilience, explain to her what may be happening and what protective factors can help her. Group A will discuss vicarious trauma, secondary trauma, and compassion fatigue/burnout (what each term means and how it may be impacting her). Group B will offer her some insight into resilience (what it is, how it can help her, and how to foster it).
