Suppose there is a large population of diploid plants (say 2000 plants) in a greenhouse with two alleles (Y and W) for a gene governing leaf colour patterns. Of the different genotypes, there are 800 YW plants, 1200 WW plants, but none are YY. Plants that are homozygous for the Y allele have bright red-striped leaves, and the florist managing the greenhouse would love to have plants with red-striped leaves to sell. The florist uses bees to randomly pollinate the plants in the greenhouse, producing seeds to grow another generation of plants. What is the expected frequency of seeds that will grow into plants with red-striped leaves?
