The clinical problem I have chosen to address is insufficient breastfeeding support for pregnant and postpartum patients, as exhibited by steadily declining postpartum breastfeeding rates. According to the most recent CDC Breastfeeding Report Card, which is comprised of data from infants born in 2019, both exclusive and any breastfeeding rates show a consistent and steady decline from birth to six and twelve months (Centers for Disease Control, 2024). Nationally, the rates of any breastfeeding declined from 83.2% at birth to 35.9% at twelve months. Exclusive breastfeeding declined from 62.6% to 24.9% in just the first six months of life (Centers for Disease Control, 2024). This decline is demonstrated in rates for Wyoming, where I anticipate practicing as a family nurse practitioner. 92.4% of mothers report having ever breastfed. However, rates of any breastfeeding at six and twelve months (respectively) were 62.7% and 41.3%, better than the national average but still a dramatic reduction (Centers for Disease Control, 2024). Exclusive breastfeeding rates in Wyoming show a similar trend: 55.3% and 27.2% at six and twelve months (Centers for Disease Control, 2024). To improve breastfeeding rates at these intervals, the U.S. Preventative Services Task Force (USPSTF) recommends implementing behavioral.
