Case Study : Pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics
Mr. Blackwell is exhausted and anxious. He has not been able to sleep well for the last month. He has hypertension, morbid obesity, diabetes, and alcoholism. After completing the physical assessment, the physician agrees to prescribe a sleeping aid.
1. Discuss the factors that could affect pharmacokinetics for this patient for each of the following (you should consider how various aspects about this particular patient impact the pharmacokinetics factors).
o Absorption o Distribution o Metabolism o Excretion
2. What should the healthcare provider monitor for this patient while he is on drug therapy? Consider all body systems that could be impacted through pharmacokinetics.
Mr. Blackwell. also states that he has been having frequent headaches. He usually takes 2 Tylenol BID (Total dose 650 mg). It takes about 30 minutes for the Tylenol to be effective. He has also tried Motrin but must take 3 Motrin for it to work (Total dose 600 mg). It also takes about 30 minutes for the Motrin to be effective.
3. Which of the two drugs is more potent?
4. Which of the two drugs has greater efficacy and why?
5. Which drugs would you recommend Mr. Blackwell take, Tylenol, Motrin, or neither, and why?
