Assessment Brief
Over the course of your studies you have reviewed case studies concerning the Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust and Tesco Plc scandals. Apply your learning from this module to critically evaluate and compare the executive leadership and governance of the two organisations.
Learning Outcome 1: Develop your knowledge of critical leadership capability in leading organisations
Learning Outcome 2: Apply your understanding of leadership principles to key business challenges
Learning Outcome 3: Critically evaluate risk management at a corporate level
Learning Outcome 4: Critically evaluate the impact of the governance and regulatory context on the success of an organisation
Your management report should contain the following:
1. A brief introduction to the topic, explaining what the report will cover (LO2).
The introduction should include:
• Explanation of the role of executive leadership and governance, such as effective corporate governance and risk management, regulatory compliance, financial leadership, fostering organisational performance and nurturing organisational culture
• Outline of what the report will include
2. Critically evaluate and compare how effectively each organisation managed the risks which presented in each situation, also discussing the impact of governance and regulation.
In order to perform this task, you should cover the following (NB. Mark allocations are guidelines to help you understand how much of your report should be dedicated to each element)
• Critical evaluation of the governance and risk management approaches used by each organisation - what each organisation did well and what they did not do well, as well the consequences
• Comparison of the governance and risk management approaches used by each organisation - similarities and differences between the organisations' governance approaches, as well as the consequences
• Discussion of how regulation could have been beneficial and how it could have hindered in each situation, drawing comparisons between the public and private sector contexts
• Inclusion of a range of governance and regulatory considerations, including sound financial management and reporting
3. Critically evaluate the leadership capability in each organisation, with specific reference to the business challenges faced in the case studies and current theoretical thinking around good leadership (LO1, LO2).
In order to perform this task, you should cover the following (NB. Mark allocations are guidelines to help you understand how much of your report should be dedicated to each element):
• Critical evaluation of each organisation's leadership - the positive and negative aspects of each leadership approach, as well as the consequences
• Comparison of each organisation's leadership - similarities and differences between the organisations' leadership approaches, as well as the consequences
• Application of current good practice leadership theory and/or research, such as leadership for performance approaches and ethical leadership
• A discussion of the board as leaders of the organisations, with evidence from the case studies provided
4. Provide a brief conclusion summarising the main findings of your report and make a closing statement (LO2).
The conclusion should include:
• An overall closing statement, tying the main threads together
