Question: If a person's religious beliefs go to the extent where a law is broken or someone is harmed, this should not be protected by the government. Religious beliefs of any kind should be accepted, but if people are using these beliefs to justify conflict with the law, they are not free from the consequences of their actions. A crime is still a crime, regardless if religion is involved or not.
The government shouldn't protect a person if their beliefs lead to bias against other groups either. Just because someone else has different thoughts and beliefs, or lives a life different from one's own, does not justify prejudice of any kind. Religion does not harm people, it is only harmful people that harm others. The right to worship is one of the initial reasons the United States exists today and this is something that should be upheld forever. Unfortunately and ironically, many people still face prejudice because of their beliefs, such as anti-Semitism and discrimination against Muslims (Glen and Waskiewicz). A lot of Christians have also argued that their own rights are being removed because of their beliefs, and use it as an excuse to ignore or refuse the rights of others, such as LGBT groups. Some politicians even take anti-LGBT stances because they believe it infringes on their religious rights (Alfonseca).
