Assignment:
I provide a few, general, examples of the vast influence of American Romanticism, as well as the Second Great Awakening:
Romantic authors tested the boundaries of consciousness, through imaginative art (Gothic and science fiction) and chemical experimentation (alcohol and drugs). The pre-Renaissance past held a special fascination for Romantic poets, who explored medieval superstitions and otherworldly concepts that both respected traditional Christianity and commented on its most confining restrictions. Without Romanticism, there would be no monsters, vampires, haunted houses, ghosts, or the Undead in art or popular culture. [ . . . ]
In the 19th century, reacting to the Enlightenment's emphasis on reason, many religious people redefined the institutional purpose of worship by holding charismatic, emotionally-driven church services. It had a strong influence on religion in the Southern American states, as it became more Evangelical, but it also influenced philosophy among intellectuals in the New England states. [ . . . ]
Without Emerson, it might have been unlikely for America to embrace movements such as New Age spirituality, youth culture, disruptive political activism and "emo" music.
After reading Emerson's "The American Scholar," as well as my "Week 8: Introduction" page, I would like you to address the following question:
What are some specific effects on today's America that were produced by Romanticism and/or the Second Great Awakening?
Please explain in detail, and provide your own examples from experience, observation, and prior learning.
Analyze the role that literature plays in the general cultural life of Americans.?
Identify those authors widely recognized as the most significant representatives of each historical period.?
