This mini-lesson should first and foremost be an oral presentation. It should thoroughly explain and examine specific examples of the devices (from any literature, film, cultural or political speech etc.) that you have been assigned (see below); you are effectively learning your assigned devices well enough to teach them to your classmates.
You could put together a brief PowerPoint (with voice overlay) to teach your classmates,. You can quiz them at then end of your lesson (lots of quiz/poll software out there if that's your thing) or you could simply ask questions for your classmates to answer in their replies to you. You could video yourself teaching the assigned devices using Zoom or Flipgrid (an app you can download for sharing video with classmates), or use Canvas tools for recording media directly to your post (see toolbar at top of reply box). There are endless ways to present - be creative and remember, you are teaching an audience - so serve them. This is not just an exercise in your own learning, you must captivate and maintain your audience's attention so they learn. Think of yourself - what ways would make learning these interesting and fun for you?
Below you will find a list of requirements, methods and device assignments to get you on your way:
Requirements
You must record your voice or your person - this is a presentation, and is scored as an "oral" presentation, which is part of this course's requirements - be sure you upload as a VIDEO no matter the presentation type!.
When discussing the device you are assigned include the following:
- Definition
- Effect of the device (how does it impact the audience? Which element does it invoke - ethos? pathos? logos?)
- At least two examples and more if necessary, to illustrate the various ways writers deploy that device (scour the internet for usage in film, political documents, advertising, law, music lyrics, or any cultural discourse - really, anywhere language is used, these devices can be found).
- Ask a question of your classmates to answer about your devices in their replies.
