The purpose of this engagement activity is for you to critically examine marketing tactics used to encourage technology use among older adults and reinforce your knowledge of aging-related features of adulthood (physical, cognitive, social). Search for (a) different technological devices available for purchase online (e.g., through Amazon, Target, Walmart, ect.) or (b) marketing strategies for technological services (e.g., Facebook, Twitter, eHarmony) that target older adults. Your task is to find two examples of technology marketed towards older adults and address the following:
1. Describe your interpretation of the marketing strategy that has been designed to draw in the older consumer. Your answer to this question could address any/all of the following examples: what features is this item/service promoting to offer older adults? Is this item directed more for a normally aging or pathologically aging older adults? Do you think this add is aimed at the older individual themselves or a caregiver for an older adult? Make sure you provide a thorough explanation that describes why you have interpreted this marketing strategy in a certain way.
2. Is this marketing strategy relying on or based in any age-related stereotypes? How so?
3. What benefits might this item or service offer older individuals? Are there any possible drawbacks if older adults used this type of item or service?
