The Oxford English Dictionary, which catalogs the changing meaning of words, defined "black" in the 15th century as:

"deeply stained with dirt; soiled, dirty, foul, having dark or deadly purposes, malignant, pertaining to or involving death; baneful, disastrous, sinister, iniquitous, atrocious, horrible, wicked"

It defines "white" during the same period as:

"purity, beauty, and goodness"
